Taking a trip

This isn't mini related but I'm recording it on my blog so that if anything happens, you'll know why.

I hate flying. I've done it before but hate it all the same. I know it's a control thing and it's the safest way to travel blah, blah, blah but taunting gravity never ends well. So, after an ill-thought out gamble with my Husband, I find myelf three weeks away from boarding a plane from Newcastle to London to Chicago...WHAT.HAVE.I.DONE...I really want to thank my soon to be ex Husband for making me honour the bet, by taking him to as many miniature related places as possible while we're away. So If anyone from the US could give me any ideas that would make my day 😄

We're spending a couple of days in each state -  Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California.

Thank you in advance. Oh and if you don't see me again in June, it's been great and I told you so!!

Pepper :)

  1. Oh Pepper, I knew you hated to fly. You told me so long ago. I am sorry since you are going to Chicago you have just missed the Tom Bishop Show. How are you getting to all those other states? Are you going to fly to those too? I know you will be fine and have a great time. Try not to worry so much. :-) XXX

    1. We'll be driving between states Catherine...thank goodness. I think four flights in three weeks is enough 😄😬

  2. Pepper, I agree. The only thing worse than flying is flying with a broken wing ;-) I'm dreading the hours-long sit in a cramped seat with my arm in a sling on my upcoming journey.
Follow your own advice and get on the plane slightly inebriated.
We will both survive the journey, and have heaps of fun once we get to our destination. Wishing you a fantastic trip and I hope you get to see your fill of miniatures!

    1. Thank you Megan. I'm trying to concentrate on the destination rather than the getting there. Wishing you a great time in Germany 🙂

    1. If I wanted that much rain, I could save myself the flights and stay in England 😄 Hope it's stopped raining now Brandy 🙂

  4. No pienses en el avión....piensa en todas las cosas bonitas que vas a ver y disfrutar y si piensa en miniaturas seguro que los malos pensamientos se van.
    Un saludo

  5. At least you'll have fun after landing. You can always take a sleeping pill along to help you overcome your anxiety.

  7. Yikes! I hope everything goes well and you have lots of fun while you're here. Alcohol is helpful but if its a long flight and you want to get onto local time someone told me to take an over the counter sleep aid so you can get yourself set to the right time zone. I think England is six hours ahead of Central Standard time and that's what Chicago is on...

I'm afraid I'm no help when it comes to mini sites. Though if you're in Chicago I highly recommend the Museum of Science and Industry. That's where Colleen Moore's Fairy Tale Castle lives and it's AMAZING! Check out the museum's website and see if you can squeeze it in.

  8. Take a gravol prior to your flight so that you're more relaxed and try to imagine yourself on a train instead of up in the air. ;)

  10. Wow what an adventure! I think flying isn’t natural either but I tell myself it’s much much safer than driving in a car. And their safety precautions are phenomenal. And my only word of advice is get the seats with extra legroom - we always do now and it makes such a huge difference. Can’t help you on amazing destinations though, but it sounds like fun. And the upside to all those flights is by the end of it, you’ll likely feel more comfortable flying.

    1. Thank you Shannon, that's good advice. It's bad enough being on a flight without sitting with your legs around your ears 😄

  12. I won't add to your woes by writing two thousand words on how I too HATE flying. As someone who crossed the pond two or more times a year for fifteen years believe me I feel your pain. There are a zillion little tips to help it along but none will really obviate it. It is a case of grit your teeth and know it will be over eventually. One bad day out and one bad day back BUT loads and loads a great new experiences in between. Bit like childbirth really, you sort of forget about it quicker than you think. Bon voyage. Hope you have a fabulous time. It starts with a happy husband who has presumably got the trip he wants.

  13. Traveling right through the middle of the USA. If you haven’t done this before, you will be amazed at the wide open plains and the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains. On to red rocks of the deserts and then back to the cities. I don’t know about miniatures, unfortunately the museum in Denver is closed. My daughter and her family loved the wacky City Museum in St. Louis, MO. Have a wonderful time!

    1. Thank you Sherrill. I asked our travel agent to book hotels in less tourist-y areas because I adore nature and the wonders of the natural world. I'm really looking forward to seeing the beauty of the USA 😊

  17. I wish you were coming to New York! Anyway, definitely see the Thorne rooms in Chicago. There is also The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures in Kansas (which has a really cool sounding exhibit about dollhouses in the 20th century); in Denver there was a dollhouse museum but it is closed, but they do sometimes have pop-up events and their mini club, I think, meets on Monday evenings, so you might be able to drop by. I haven't been to any of these, but they all sound great (except formerly to the Denver Museum of dollhouses, miniatures etc.) In Maysville, Kentucky, they have the KSB Miniature collection, which I'd love to see. I will look through my magazines for a list of dollhouse shops in those states.

    1. You know, this trip is me trying to work up to more frequent flights so New York is not out of the question. I would love to visit and of course, meet up with you 😊 Thank you for all the info. They all sound amazing and I'll definitely be looking out for them 😃

  18. There is a dollhouse and miniature show in Kansas from June 7-8 at Overland Park, so that would be cool if you could visit that!

  19. I know you will make it... hand grabbing your husband's hand during the take-off leaving deep marks in his skin could be helpful too! *grin* No, just kidding… I'm wishing to you a wonderful time and I'm looking forward to see you back in June with loads of wonderful stories and even more pictures to share.

  20. Dear Pepper, I love to fly so I am no help at all as far as advice goes! I always want a window seat and keep my nose glued to the window to see what we are flying over... you can try doing the opposite? I am sure you will make it through and your hubby can hold your hand... I am really looking forward to seeing your pics of this trip! You will not be near where I am or I would invite you over! :) I hope you find great mini things along the way! :)

  21. Even for people who don't hate flying - travelling at airports is not much fun :-( Just got back from Bilbao: instead of an easy 2-hour flight it took me 18hrs because of technical issues, re-routing, sleep-over in franfurt, etc.
Best to take something with you that really absorps you. I usually do puzzles on my ipad. Being focused on something else lets me forget about the people and the hassle....
But I am absolutely sure that - once you are there - you will not regret..
