Gifts

I love reading other peoples blogs and picking up things that I would otherwise miss. Kikka posted about these miniature tic-tac boxes which are just about perfect for mini food storage containers. I mentioned them to my mate Charlie, who was heading out for a lads weekend in Spain. He came into work today and look what he brought me...

Another surprise arrived too. I mentioned to The Shopping Sherpa that I liked a crate she had discovered on one of her epic shopping trips. TSS spent the next couple of months filling the crate with things she thought I would like and sent it to me. This is a selection of the lovely things I recieved.

Sweetest of all, TSS made me a miniature copy of the magazine that we were both featured in.

Thank you TSS, thank you Kikka, and thank you to all who generously share their tips, tutorials and gifts with the rest of us.

I've spent most of the last week glueing and sanding the floorboards in The Mill. I started with Ash veneer strips because in my head, I thought the very pale colour would look good against the Walnut stairs and brick.

However, when I finished it looked too pale and just a little bit icky yellow so I decided it needed to be darker and aged. I chose Sandolin's African Walnut which looked like mud in the tin. It actually freaked me out, wondering if I was about to ruin a weeks worth of work.

It definitely has more character and looks as if it has been there a long time but I may do a few more coats to get an even colour. Hmm

Well were heading into a Bank Holiday weekend here in the UK. Three whole days. Ah, I can't wait

Have a good one

    1. Hi Marion,
I used a fast setting contact adhesive for the veneer so the warping was minimal. I still had to keep the boards pressed flat whilst the glue dryed. That took up most of the time =0)

  2. Unos regalos muy bonitos, y recuerdo de esas personas desinteresadas que se ocupan de darnos alegrias.
El suelo se ve precioso, más bien la estancia parece real, no mini.

  9. Those Tic-Tac boxes are great, and the crate of goodies are fab too, the floor of the mill is coming along great, if you decide to add a few more coats but are worried about it being a little too dark try using a little beeswax to tone it back a little :)

  10. Ah, surprises... what could be better - especially if they are as nice as this ones! Your lucky to have a very nice Charlie in your life - and the gifts from The Shopping Sherpa are wonderful. I like especially that she used the crate you liked for all the other goodies... some kind of a treasure chest. Wonderful work on the floor.

  12. I like the finish with the varnish. In the picture it looks very natural, as though slightly different bits of the tree have been used to give that natural variety you find in real wood floors.

Love the box of goodies and the Tic Tacs too :)

  15. Hi Pepper! You've got some delightful friends, to send you all those wonderful minis!.. I really like the floors, they fit exactly the image that I have of where you are going with this project... (which if you ARE,, I truly love!). It looks like an old loft apartment... Excited to see where you take this!

    1. Hi Doug, that's exactly the idea behind this build. I took a lot of inspiration from loft apartment photos and hoped to get across the idea of a well used building. Thank you =0)

  16. Wow! Great gifts!!! You have the right kind of friends obviously! LOL!
I think the floor looks Great with the stain on it... but it could go darker. Wood darkens with age and a bleached white floor is a very modern idea! In the "old days" when cleanliness was harder to keep up with ... the darkness of a floor was an asset if it hid stains and the daily dirt of boots tracking mud indoors! With many floors over here that were originally pine, they turn quite orange in color with age... and are called "Pumpkin pine" for that reason! I prefer a less orange tint myself... but I agree that your floor should look a rich mellow brown in color!

    1. I'm so glad you said that Betsy. I have just finished the third coat today and I really like how warm the brown looks. You can still see the grain of the wood, which I was happy about, but I think it needed to be darker. Thank you =0)
